Say cheese .... and get healthy
It was stated by Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) in America that cheese is Number-One Source of Artery-Clogging Fat in American Diet. The organization went further by urging the population to cut back cheese consumption.
I must say that the above statement is not entirely mistaken even though it can be misleading. The fact is that cheese can be a good addition to our diet if consumed in responsibly proper intake. The good news is: modest amount does not harm your heart. We can also note that cheese is often used in "mediterranean" diets, noted for their ability to reduce heart-disease risk.
What about the calorie and fat content? Here are some facts: an ounce hard cheese contains 110 cal and 9g fat or about 70% of cal from fat. Roughly 60% is saturated, which is bad for arteries. It must be underlined that there are many types of cheese each with different content of sodium, fat and calories.
| Cheese (1 oz) | Fat(g) | Saturated fat(g) | Sodium(mg) | Calories |
| Parmesan | 1.5 | 1 | 90 | 25 |
| Goat | 4 | 2.5 | 120 | 50 |
| American | 4 | 3 | 300 | 60 |
| Mozzarella | 5 | 3 | 170 | 80 |
| Swiss | 8 | 5 | 10 | 100 |
| Cheddar | 9 | 5 | 180 | 110 |
| Provolone | 11 | 8 | 370 | 150 |
