Water for our health

The facts. Can you remember any single day in your life where you can be independent from water?

I bet the chances are vanishingly zero. In fact, as an adult human being, 60 to 70 per cent of our totalbody weight consists of water, and without regular top-ups, our body's survival time is limited to a matterof hours or days. Even though water contains no nutrients, it has an important role for the maintainanceand growth of our bodies.
How much is enough? The British Dietetic Association advises that the average adult should consume 2.5litres of water per day. Of this, 1.8 litres - the equivalent of six to seven glasses of water per day -must be obtained directly from beverages. This should be increased during periods of hot weather or duringand after periods of physical activity.
Plain water. Drinking plain water is the most effective way to top-up the loss of fluids in your body. Fruitjuices are 90% water, while diluted squashes and carbonated drinks are 86% and 65% water. Also rememberthat some types of drink contain fat and caffeine that we do not want to consume too much. Here is anexcerpt of beverages that you need to watch for its calories, fat and caffeine.

Why drinking is a bad idea

While the alcohol in red wine can help protect your heart, the benefit must
be fairly weighted with its associated risks. Here are the top five risk due to
alcohol:

  • Heavy drinking can cause liver disease and eventually liver damage

  • Regular drinking can impair mental function and memory

  • Drinking increases the risk of breast cancer for women

  • Heavy alcohol consumption causes hypertension increasing the risk for
    stroke and kidney failure

  • Drinking increases the risk of injuries and accidents on roadways and
    workplace

If you want to combine red wine to balance your fatty menu, just remember
that moderation is always the key.
